Maan’s Preps Attire

Author: Jean
08 15th, 2008

The first time I saw Maan (and his hubby, Mike) was on July 24, about less than 2 weeks before her wedding! That’s the only time I took her measurements for her preps attire. =) She and her hubby resides in the US. We communicated thru email and she only called me up once (i think.. hehe).

And when I saw her the first time, mas prettier pala sya compared sa picture na sinend nya.. hyper and less mataray sounding.. *PEACE MAAN!!!* I happen to misunderstand her emails in the past. I thought she was being mataray.. pero yun pala.. super excited lang itong si Girl. =D

Maan02Anyway, she didn’t know what her preps attire would look like, so it only came as a surprise the night (as in like, 10pm) of her wedding. So before that, I told her to prepare an extra attire, just in case she wouldn’t like it, at least may back up. And I wouldn’t feel bad if she wore something else.

Personally, feeling ko kasi, super arte nung ginawa kong dress na siguro baka mahirapan sya maappreciate yun…

But when she got to fit it (first fitting nung night before.. kasi super busy na kaming lahat hahahaha..), natuwa sya.. *whew* ang problem lang, maluwag and A-line cut! So we had to alter it and change the skirt into Pencil cut.

Jean_Maan01

Me with Maan. I was tasked to pretend that I’m putting the hairpiece.. lolz!

Super happy si Maan. (sobrang aliw ako sa mga expressive na tao… talagang ramdam mo na masaya sila)

Pero syempre, patikim lang itong entry na ito.. hihihi.. I still have to wait for the photos of her mom and her entourage. Maan bought her gown in the US. It was made by Maggie Sottero.. kaya preps gown lang ang contribution ko sa kanya..

But…. no matter how small my contribution to a wedding, ang point naman eh.. may napasaya akong tao. If that happened - mission accomplished!

I’m back from blogging again, coz I just received a bunch of pictures from Claudette! She stayed true to her promise and she did send me SORTED pictures from her wedding.. just the pictures that I need. (Thank you Claudette for sending me your beautiful pictures!)

Claudette002
Claudette posing during preps

But before I talk about Claudette’s wedding, some of you may be wondering why I’m not usually prompt in replying to some of your inquiries for the past few days..

Thing is we’re still a small team of designer-pattern maker-sewer-beader and so on.. and for the past 3 weeks I have been multi-tasking.. and also harassing my team to finish all the gowns that needed to be delivered! With that some drama moments, sugar hype and working in my dreams.. (yep, i get to sleep and I make it a point that I sleep.. but due to the stress level, i dream about my work and i work in my dreams!)

And this monday and tuesday, I took 2 days off! Sabi nga sa homily ni Fr. Johnny last sunday, during war time, there is such a thing called a tactical retreat… where you find time to get out of the war for a while in order to compose yourself, tend your wounds, reset your goals and prepare for the next battle. eto na yung tactical retreat ko! hehe..

But i’m back in responding to your emails.. so do check your mailbox coz I sent you one for sure! (do check your spam mail ones in a while, coz some of your mails go to my spam box too but i never fail to respond to it. =))

Claudette003
Candid shot of me and Claudette

(Side comment: Baka you’re wondering bakit pareho palagi getup ko during weddings.. well.. naliligo naman ako, pero favorite ko talaga tong dress na ito coz it’s comfy, easy to wear and it has huge pockets. hehehe)

Claudette010Okay, going back..

Claudette and Eric are based in Kuwait. The one who contacted me (around march?) was her mom Ms. Linda. She was referred by (who else?) Cecilio Abad.

medyo marami akong bloopers kanila Claudette..

first, I cc-ed an email to her mom and mali yung address.. instead na pampee, eh nasulat ko, pantee..

second, akala ko yung 3 Secondary sponsors nya eh sisters nya.. di pala! Cousin pala.. cousin!

According to claudette, she liked Janice’s gown (june 2, 2007 wedding).. so medyo derived sya dun. Instead of choosing a lace based top, i decided na fully beaded na lang gawin namin.. (kahit na common ang beadworks dito sa pinas, i still believe iba pa rin ang effect nito!) Claudette wanted a simple design with an classy touch.. so this it what i came up with. I will not claim it to be all original… point is, bumagay sa kanya and she loved it! (and I loved it too kasi hindi sya nilamon ng beads, nacompliment talaga sya nung gown!)

Claudette001ang pinaka masaya dito, when she arrived from kuwait (that was july 12 I think) unang fitting pa lang eh WA na alterations! bawas na lang sa hem, and beadwork tapos na! Siguro kasi Lace up back din kaya mabilis maadjust! and in fairness to the one who took the measurements, maayos talaga ang sukat!

and dahil super bait ni claudette.. aba, tinatadtad ko talaga ng beads ang gown nya.. talaga naman nakakainspire ang mga super bait na clients!

After nung fitting ni claudette… tumambling tumbling na kami dito sa shop.. Actually, we where simultaneously fitting/altering/beading the gowns of Dennis & Rhea, Claudette and Maan (3 different clients). And the delivery of Claudette’s gowns were almost photo finish! Most of her entourage is based overseas.. siguro mga 4 out of 12 lang ang nasa pinas.. and to think na Laguna based pa yung mga nasa pinas..

So most of them arrived a week before the wedding day..

and meron pang isang pahabol..

5-7 days before wedding, i found out na di pala makakapunta yung isang entourage ni claudette.. so..

they replaced her. but her gown was already finished!

and ang pinaka winner na comment from one of the entourage…

“Tingnan mo yung clouds o, terno na sa motif natin!”

Motif: Silver with accent of Blue green

Claudette004
From top left: Phyllis - MOH, Jovy-BM, Maureen-SS, Margaret-SS, Melanie-SS and Jane-BM with Claudette

So matindi talaga ang fighting spirit ng barkada ni Claudette!! and dun ko talaga na feel na super close sila.

Pag pasok sa sofitel staircase, bumuhos ang malakas na ulan. (thank you lord, di sila nabasa!)

Claudette005
This is how I play with motifs.. Everyone in Dominant Silver with Accent of Blue green and the MOH in Dominant Blue green with accent of silver.. even the pouch bags. =)

Claudette006
Claudette’s portrait shot

buti na lang.. walang nakabook sa indoor function room ng illustrado! (akala mo malas, pero swerte talaga!) kaya todo move lahat ng mga setup!

Although nalate ng about 1 1/2 hour yung wedding nila, ang point is, natuloy!

Claudette008
Parents of Eric, Eric and Claudette and Parents of Claudette..

Claudette007
Eric and Claudette with the Bearers and Flower Girls. Flower girls are daughters of the 3 secondary sponsors! cool no? parang little SS lang sila..

So no disaster can truly destroy a wedding! Nakijoin pa nga ang skies to blend in with Claudette’s motif eh! hehehe…

marami pa talagang kwento, pero tamad na ko magtype! haha..

Claudette009

so cheers to Claudette and Eric and to their loving and supportive families and friends!

I am just so excited to post this since I haven’t blogged for the longest time!

Thanks so much to Jay jay lucas for providing me pictures! YAY!!! You did such a great job in capturing unforgettable moments of Dennis and Rhea’s wedding. And you made my gowns extra beautiful!

D&R-medcity1Dennis and Rhea were one of the first few clients Cecilio Abad referred to me. (Thanks Cecil, I owe this to you! They are such a wonderful couple!) This was our second design collaboration in a wedding.

Dennis and Rhea wanted a colorful Motif for their wedding. Their main colors were Orange, Yellow and Royal Blue - A combination of primary colors with one secondary color. Most people would think that these colors are too LOUD.. but whenever i get the chance to reflect on this (hehe) the colors really suit the couple’s personalities. They are both strong, warm, candid, and wise to have chosen such great suppliers.. (LOL)

Dennis and rhea allowed me to decide a look for their entourage.. so this is what I made for them..

I based on the entire look of their entourage from one the gowns by Eli Saab Autumn/winter 2008-2009 collection taken from www.vogue.co.uk

Eli-saab27

I adapted the cut and silhoutte, plus how Mr. Eli played with texture using 3 textures from 3 different fabrics. Instead, I used Charmeuse/Satin paired with Chiffon.

As accents, my good beader-marie cut-stitched-beaded chiffon rosettes.

Each member got a different neckline design to suit their built. Rosettes were playfully incorporated to match the neckline design.
I have always used colors to represent each group of the entourage so we can easily determine the identity of each group. (And as we were deciding on this, it got a little confusing coz their were changes here and there, but it all turned out pretty well in the end! hehe)

For the Bridesmaids & Jr. Bridesmaid, Dennis and Rhea picked orange as their dominant color and I recommended they get a yellow accent.

D&R-BMs

For the Secondary Sponsors, Royal blue with an accent of orange.

D&R-SS

For the little flower girls, Yellow with an accent of Blue.

D&R-FG

For the Matrons of Honor  - Didi wore Golden Yellow, and Rhoda wore a darker Royal Blue - this is almost similar to the color of their Mom’s gowns.

D&R-MOHs

For the ninangs, we simply picked Yellow with accent of orange.

For the bearers, we chose an Icy blue Satin front with dark blue with light blue -black-white-pinstripes -polyester back matched with a cute cute yellow bow tie.

D&R-Bearer

And for Keith, the Jr. Groomsman, Charcoal Grey vest and silver tie to match Dennis’ vest and tie. (will still have to wait for more pictures from jayjay! hehe)

For the ties of the entourage, we matched the ladies color, and chose a different hue - except for the Best men, who wore greyish-latte ties.

Dennis was responsible for choosing the tie colors.. hehe.. he’s so OC with everything, he took the lead in planning their wedding. Siguro ganun nya talaga kamahal si Rhea and he made sure everything is well prepared and well thought of! Rhea, we so envy you! hehe..

OH YES..

These little people deserve to get a special mention in my blog.

D&R-Kids

I just found this pic in Jayjay’s blog.. and i thought you were super cute!!!  I can never forget you little angels.. heheheh… I can never forget my experiences with you! hehehehe…

All in all, Dennis efforts paid of. We were lucky enough to attend their wedding reception, and everything turned out wonderfully…

D&Rwj&j

and I thought, after we left their reception, they just went to rest..

to find out the following day, after their reception, they made a surprise visit to Carlo of Imagine Nation in MED CITY!! yep.. sa hospital!  May pictorials pa ng nakagown and suit! ang lufet! Dennis and Rhea were kind enough to visit him.. to read more about it, read Jayjay’s blog..

John and I will surely miss our meetings! Wishing you guys all the best!

Choosing your COLOR MOTIF

Ever wonder what MOTIF’s are for? If you do not have a theme for your wedding, one usually has at least a MOTIF. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines a Motif as a recurring element or a single or repeated design or color. In the Philippine setting, a Motif usually pertains to the COLOR OF YOUR WEDDING. So to further clarify that definition, let us use the term COLOR MOTIF.

Misconception #4 Every element in your wedding should follow your color motif.

As I have observed, the usual trend in most weddings here is that the color of the invitation should be the same color of your entourage’s dresses, table mantels and so on. Although color motifs are usually used to express the statement (whatever statement it maybe) of your wedding let us not exaggerate it so much to the point that when your lady entourage arrives to your reception, it will be difficult for you to tell where they are because they unwillingly camouflaged themselves againts your backdrop and table mantels.

ADVICE: To avoid this unfortunate event, I would recommend that you prepare 2 or more sets of color motif. Each set for each wedding need. Though it will add another task on your to-do-list, all your efforts will be worth it in the end. But before that, choose the main color motif which you would like to have.

UNIVERSAL GUIDE - THE COLOR WHEEL

Color Wheel - basic

The color wheel is our most basic guide in choosing colors. We’ve all seen this since we were little, and you’ll bump into it every once in a while.

I found a wonderful site which explained the principles of the color wheel. I got this from Pagethinker.com

Here’s a short excerpt and some of my inputs. =)

(quoted articles are from the website… images available in Pagethinker.com)

The Color Wheel

“Wherever there’s light, there’s color. White light contains all visible colors, which form an infinite spectrum that appears in the red-to-violent sequence, like the rainbow. The color wheel represents this infinite spectrum with 12 basic hues.”

Visible light color spectrum

Hues

“These 12 hues consist of primary, secondary and tertiary colors. The three primary colors of blue, yellow and red combine to make secondary colors; which combine to make tertiary colors.”

Primary Secondary Tertiary colors

“Constructed in an orderly progression, the color wheel is the range of visible light—represented by the 12 basic hues—formed into circle. It enables the user to visualize the sequence of color balance and harmony. The 12 basic hues are: Red, Red Orange, Orange, Yellow Orange, Yellow, Yellow Green, Green, Blue Green, Blue, Blue Violet, Violet, Red Violet.”

Color wheel with Hue names

Color Value

“Each hue is at a level of full saturation, or brightness. There is no black or white added. When the relative amount of white or black is added to a hue, the color has lightness and darkness, called value. To show value, the color wheel has more rings: two outter for dark shades and two inner for light tints.”

Color wheel

Jean’s note: In this image you will find that there is no limit in a certain color once you have seen the lighter and darker values of it.

——–

to read more about the color wheel theory, click here.

Color Schemes

“Monochromatic: This palette has the dark, medium and light values of a single color. It has no color depth, but it provides the contrast of dark, medium and light that’s important to good design.”

Jean’s note: If you like a certain color very much and you don’t want to add on a second color, monochromatic scheme is the best choice for you. =) An interesting combination derived from a monochromatic scheme can be Yellow orange and Milk&Coffee Brown

———

“Analogous: These are adjacent colors. They share strong undertones which create pleasing, low-contrast harmony. Analogous palettes are rich and always easy to work with.”

Jean’s note: Analagous colors are usually the easiest to pull off since you cannot go wrong with this scheme as each color gradually compliments the other. If you wish to have a Windy-autumn theme, try the combination of olive green, pastel yellow and yellow orange.

——–

“Complement: These are colors directly opposite of each other on the color wheel. Complementary colors are contrasting, convey energy, vigor and excitement.”

Jean’s note: Though complements are a little challenging to pull off, it’s usually the scheme that is not commonly used because of it’s very striking appeal. You may want to combine a lighter value of one color to a darker one to make it a little less shocking. For a summer inspired motif, Orange and cornflower or pool blue is an interesting choice.

——-

“Split Complement: These are colors one step either way of the complement’s own analogous colors. It’s strength is in the low-contrast beauty of analogous colors, plus the added accent of an opposite color.”

Jean’s note: Split complements are my fav because of the unusual yet appealing color combinations we can derive from it. If you observe carefully, the color motif trend last 2006-2007 of Pink & Brown came from this scheme. (That’s pink from red and brown from orange) Aqua Blue& Chocolate brown has also become a popular choice among weddings.

——–

“Primary: The primary colors are often seen in children’s products.

Secondary: Secondary colors have a lot in common so they harmonize easily.”

Jean’s note: I wouldn’t really recommend this combination for very discriminating brides and guests (hehe..) But, it’s not a bad combination for Fiesta themes, or any Country-inspired theme (American, Italian etc.)

fit IT right!

One of the most important dates you have to attend when you have a gown custom-made is the fitting schedule.

For our custom-made gowns, we usually have 2 fittings for the ladies (3 fittings for the bride), and at least 1 fitting for the kids and the guys. The ladies are REQUIRED to fit their gowns prior the event to ensure the gown fits their bodies properly. Sometimes, there are no alterations, but more often than not, there are minor adjustments necessary.

For clients based abroad, we schedule their fittings a day or right after their arrival. Whether you fit it a week or a day before the event, the important thing is, you schedule your fitting with is and arrive on the agreed time and date!

Today, I’ve just finished 4 consecutive schedules fitting!

tiring… grabeh! It wasn’t suppose to be like this really!

But i’m happy there very little adjustments to most gowns! I just wish it’s not always this hectic. To be honest, following up fitting schedules & appointments is my least favorite task in this line of work.

This week I’ve texted (even called) my clients to schedule their fitting (especially the one whose wedding is just a week a way). I’ve already texted most of them 2 weeks ahead. Some replied (thank you!) the others, we had to call them up (GOSH!). Good thing I’ve got John on my side to help me do the follow ups! It’s kinda hard to concentrate on more important stuff if i know the deadline of a client is just a few days away!

I know most of our clients are very busy people. There are the doctors, the accountants, engineers, the entrepreneurs, so on and so fort. And we understand how busy you must be. But to those clients who really make an effort to schedule ahead with us, they usually don’t have any problems with their orders, … Sad to say, there are those who are not very familiar with the concept of time - if you think your busy, imagine what kind of work we have to face if you fit later than the actual fitting schedule! You did not only limit the amount of time we have to finish your gown, of course the schedule of my other clients before or after you also got affected. Not to mention the stress I’m gonna put on my staff.

It’s not a very happy situation to be. We would like to give you the value of your money as well, so do schedule your fittings once I have notified you that your gowns are ready so we won’t have any problems.

Responsible client = Happy supplier

Happy supplier =  Quality work

Quality work = Happy Client

That’s how it goes! And it’s proven a fact!

Forgive me if I sound a little nagging.. like I said.. following up is not really my favorite thing to do. If I happen to nag you through text, that means you have become a very difficult person to handle (and my deadline is very very near!).. I’m usually very patient naman.

Kaya peeps… Schedule your fittings na! Para happy tayong lahat!

Bubbly Kelly

When I checked through my emails today, I found Kelly’s unexpected message, which include some pictures of her wedding with her sincere thanks plus this remark…

“..I really love love love my gown, it was more than I expected.”

This email made my day. =)

Raquel or Kelly is my first minimalist bride. I only got the chance to meet her less than 2 weeks before her wedding coz she and Joe are based in Australia. We did her gown, her entourage gowns and Joe’s Grey suit.

During her 2nd fitting with me, I asked her if she wanted beads on her gown… and she said “Nope, I love it as it is.” =)

It’s kinda rare to find a bride like her. What’s good about her is that she knows exactly what she wants and sticks to her decisions. She is simple in taste, very sweet and very understanding. She was also a little bubbly.. hehe.. like her bubble skirt gown.. hehehe… When we were doing her gown, may kasabay kaming project that was totally stressing me out, but she didn’t stressed us too much, so our experience working together with Raquel & Joe and their family and friends has always been pleasant.

For now, these are the only pictures I have. These are sent by Raquel. Photos are taken by Ariel Javelosa Photography last April 4, 2008.

I thought of writing about some common misconceptions during wedding preparations after I had to explain to most clients of mine that not all decisions during wedding preps should be based on traditions, trends, or what your mother-in-law or friends are telling you.

I’ll be posting a series of entries which are titled Wedding MISCONCEPTIONS (or in short WM PART #), and little by little, i hope to share my experiences and opinions about the different misconceptions a bride-to-be and a groom-to-be might encounter as they prepare for their much awaited event.

Choosing your Entourage

entourage

3D image created from David’s Bridal website

Misconception #1: Your Entourage should be Single, not Married!

The typical idea of an attendant, (Abay in Filipino) is that he/she has to be single. Most couples don’t usually have a problem in choosing their entourage if they find themselves having a lot of single friends. But what if most of your close friends and relatives are already married? aren’t they qualified to become your entourage?

Of course, they are still qualified. Actually, it’s not a big deal if they are single or married. Anyway, the purpose of having bridesmaids or groomsmen is for you to have someone to rely on during your wedding preparations.

Misconception #2: Your Entourage is part of your props!

What usually happen is that most Filipinos and Filipino-Chinese fail to delegate their preparations to their attendants. Their main purpose (if you even call it a purpose!) is to parade during the bridal march and to join the singles game during the reception. =D

And if a couple is vain.. one of their criteria in choosing their entourage is that they’d have to be good looking and should be sexy or macho so that they will look good in the pictures. (and to some, they maybe looking for the opposite…)

If this is how you choose your attendants, you totally miss the point!

Misconception #3: You are required to have an Entourage.

Having an entourage is totally up to you. It is not required. If you are having a civil ceremony, does the city hall require you to have a bridesmaid/groomsman? In a Christian wedding, do they require the entourage to sign as witnesses to your marriage?

My Advice: Although, it is fun and attractive to have your close friends/relatives walk with you during the bridal march, it is not compulsory. You don’t have to stress yourself in finding a single beautiful and sexy friend/relative. Trust me, you’ll save yourself some stress. You can even decide not to have them at all. But if in any case you decide to get yourself an entourage, here’s a 2 things that you may want to consider.

  1. Degree of Friendship - How important is this person to you and how important are you to this person? If your answer and their answer is VERY IMPORTANT or CANNOT SURVIVE WITHOUT THEM, then they should be your #1 choice!
  2. Are they responsible and trustworthy? - Instead of shouldering all the stressful task of planning your wedding alone, why not get a person whose opinion you value and who can help you make some decisions for your wedding? It’s actually very practical. Your task lessens as you delegate it, you can bond with your friend/relative on the side, and you can also have REAL fun as you plan your big day!

Remember, relationships count more than material details.

04 9th, 2008

Yay! finally had the drive to redesign this blog!

Thought of a lot of ideas on how to dress up this blog, from images of galliano’s patterns, stitched fabric, scissors, my picture blah blah blah…

but at the end, i decided to make it simple, sweet and just plain fun (for me to do!) hehehe…

The blog design I made comprised of some self made kraft paper background, striped white paper, a few swirls, an edited bounded sketch pad and a past design.

I’m just so happy that my last year’s sketch of SPRING fit this template!

04 1st, 2008

This project has been a very difficult and a very stressful one for me and for my Staff. We were asked to produce a Wedding gown in less than 10 days (supposedly) but we ended up making it in 10 days tops. Still, not bad pa rin.

The inquiry came on a Wednesday before holy week, i think that’s March 12. Ms. Mila, Ninang of the bride and Glenn, Father of the Bride arrived about 10 in the morning. It was an impromptu meeting. Eventually, i found out they needed a gown before they leave for Malaysia on March 29. The bride, Jennifer, is in Malaysia and will get married there. Ms. Mila would want a custom made gown for her soon-to-be inaanak and it’s gonna be her gift for her. I was given several printouts of gowns she liked and her measurements. That was all I have.

From the pictures of Pronovias gowns they printed, I came up with several sketches - designs which i thought translated the OVERFLOWING ideas they gave me. So they chose 1. and this is the rough sketch.

Jennifer_Gown

Aside from that, they wanted me to alter a Pronovias Gown (I love pronovias gowns! i soo love it!) which Jen bought on sale and of course, produce the bridal accessories that follows her motif.

Everything happened so fast. Friday, I bought the materials. their choices were Organdy Jusi over duchess satin in Ivory color. After that, we had it patterned and cut. The following day it was sewn. It took about a couple more days to sew. The ninang had the fitting because their measurements were very close. There were adjustments and it was fitted again on thursday (maundy thursday) .. yessss…. we were working on this holiday. but we took friday, saturday and sunday off. Come monday, we had the lace scallops (provided by ms. mila) embroidered on the hem and on the veil. Tuesday till friday, 3 beaders were working on it…

Friday, an hour before they picked it up, I’ve decided that this gown needed a pictorial session of its own because of 2 reasons. it’s our baby, and we don’t know if the bride will be happy to wear it so we’ll never know if we’ll get pictures of her wearing it. I never got the chance to meet Jen as well.
So here are some snapshots.

Super thanks to my brother for the pictures!

After we’ve successfully delivered it, we were so happy!!! And i was very happy of the outcome. it looks like a sister gown of my Spring design in the past. Kudos to our team!

The elation lasted for a couple of hours. after which, i had to attend to my other bride for her wedding the following day. This time, I’m her Wedding planner =P

Len and Kirby’s wedding is a different story.=D
